Weary-Word Wednesday… SUSTAINABLE

Actually, the title is a red herring: SUSTAINABLE is already over! You don’t really have to worry about the word “sustainable”, because it has been replaced by this year’s already-weary replacement:

Want to know what it is?

Are you ready?

Are you sure?

The word is…

SUFFICIENT.

Mostly used in the context of SELF-sufficient, this is the buzzword to end all buzzwords, summing up all the marvellous intentions of such previously-weary words as: “eco” and “green.”

Seriously, go look up how many books were published in the last year or two with “sufficient” in their title – it will boggle your mind, or at the very least, make you quietly go “huh!”

To a geek and former amateur logician such as myself, the word innately offends me because this use really has little to do with its original, mathematical reason. I may not be able to tell you what the second “f” in “iff” means anymore, but that doesn’t mean I don’t CARE.
